September 13, 2006
The New York financier George Soros today pledged $50-million to the Millennium Promise Alliance to combat poverty and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, reports Reuters.
The money will go toward the Millennium Villages program, which provides mosquito nets to deter the malaria-carrying insects, fertilizers to refresh depleted soils, school lunches for malnourished children, and medications for people living with HIV/AIDS.
