Age at death: 71
How she made her mark: During a time when nonprofits were growing fast, she pushed them to organize and demonstrate their political clout, and to learn from one another.
Major philanthropic job: Ms. Green served as executive director of the California Association of Nonprofits from 1995 to 2008. During her tenure, the association tripled its budget and staff size and established a legislative office in Sacramento.
Key accomplishments: Ms. Green was a founder of the National Council of Nonprofits and the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, two organizations that serve charities throughout the country. She served as one of the first training directors for the Grantsmanship Center, crisscrossing the nation to advise nonprofit groups. And she was a co-founder of the IdeaEncore Network, an online resource that allows nonprofit organizations to share information in areas such as contracts, policies, regulations, and guidelines.
How she will be remembered: In an online Web site memorializing Ms. Green, many charity leaders left comments praising her visionary leadership and passion for charitable organizations, as well as her humor and love of theater, film, and the arts. “There has never been as fierce a defender and champion of community-based nonprofits,” wrote Jan Masaoka, Ms. Green’s successor at the California Association of Nonprofits.
