October 16, 1997 | Read Time: 1 minute

Forbes has joined the growing number of publications that have ranked wealthy people for their philanthropy. Along with its annual list of the nation’s 400 richest people (October 13), the magazine named the 10 who were most philanthropic.

Topping the donor list was Walter Annenberg, who has given at least $1.2-billion over his lifetime, according to the magazine. He was followed by George Soros ($1.1-billion), Charles Feeney ($600-million), William R. Hewlett (more than $570-million), William H. Gates ($290-million), Jon Huntsman ($250-million), Kirk Kerkorian (more than $170-million), John Kluge (more than $160-million), Ronald O. Perelman ($152-million), and H. Ross Perot ($135-million).

Other magazines that have issued rankings in the past year include Fortune and Slate, the on-line magazine (The Chronicle, October 2).
