A man from Nigeria is pursuing a master’s degree in deaf education at Gallaudet University thanks to a fellowship awarded by the Ford Foundation, reports The Washington Post.
The article profiles Godwin Irokaba, who lost his hearing after a bout with meningitis at age 9. He is participating in Ford’s $355-million fellowship program, which seeks to give 4,000 students from developing countries by 2014 the chance to pursue postgraduate degrees. Fellows must agree to return to their home countries after graduation and work for social change.
The program has attracted over 100,000 applicants.
