Delores Cross, former president of Morris Brown College, a historically black college in Atlanta, pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges for misappropriating student financial aid, reports The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She could face up to five years in prison, but the government is recommending a 10- to 16-month sentence.
Its financial-aid director, Parvesh Singh, also pleaded guilty to embezzlement last week.
Ms. Cross, who left the institution in 2002, admitted to receiving federal aid for students she knew were not enrolled at the college as a way to try to keep its doors open. According to the Journal-Constitution, the institution was not bringing in enough money to operate.
The college lost its accreditation in late 2002 as a result of its fiscal problems.
