Former Presidents Plead for Katrina Gifts

August 23, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund raised more than $129-million from some 60,000 donors and distributed the money in the year since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, write the former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton in USA Today.

Among the money the fund spent was $40-million given to the funds run by the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama; $30-million to higher education; and $25-million to the region’s religious entities.

But Mr. Bush and Mr. Clinton also ask the country to consider giving more, and encourage people to visit their fund’s Web site for a list of other nonprofit organizations accepting donations for work that will continue into the future.
