Former Presidents Seek to Form Baptist Coalition

January 22, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter are working to form a new, moderate coalition of Baptist organizations that could serve as an alternative to the conservative Southern Baptist Coalition, reports The Washington Post.

Both former presidents were raised Southern Baptist but say they have grown disappointed with the direction of the Southern Baptist Convention, which condemns homosexuality and abortion and does not allow women to serve as pastors.

Mr. Carter says the new organization is not meant to be political. But a spokesman for the Southern Baptist Convention raised questions about the new group’s ability to be perceived as nonpartisan given its close ties to the Democratic former presidents.
