Foundation Fighting Public-Employee Unions Poised for Supreme Court Decision

The conservative Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, which has spent millions on efforts to dismantle public-employee unions, may see a victory this week as the Supreme Court hears a case brought by public-school teachers who have declined to joined the union that represents them, Politico reports.
The foundation has given at least $2 million to the Center for Individual Rights, the nonprofit law firm that brought the case, Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, as well as at least 11 organizations that submitted amicus briefs for the plaintiffs. Should the court rule in the plaintiffs’ favor, the result will likely be a significant loss of membership and revenue for public-sector unions.
The foundation has supported efforts to make Michigan and Wisconsin “right-to-work” states, which means unions cannot charge fees to nonmembers.
