Foundation Gives $25-Million to N.Y. University

May 9, 2006

The foundation managed by a former chair of the math department at the State University of New York at Stony Brook will give $25-million to the university, reports The New York Times.

Jim Simons, founder of Renaissance Technologies, a hedge fund, and co-manager of the Simons Foundation, was chair of the department from 1968 to 1976. The Simons Foundation gave $13-million last month to a national laboratory co-managed by Stony Brook.

University officials said the $25-million gift was one of the largest ever to Stony Brook or any school in the state system.
