The Howard Charitable Foundation, philanthropic arm of Howard Publications, in California, has committed $30-million to a new cardiovascular institute at Scripps Health, in La Jolla, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The grant is one of the largest in the hospital system’s history, and “absolutely guarantees the existence” of the $430-million institute, Chris Van Gorder, the hospital’s president, tells the paper.
The new facility will consolidate cardiology programs at two hospitals within the Scripps system, a step that mirrors a national trend toward centralizing medical expertise, the Union-Tribune reports.
The Howard Foundation’s gift marks the beginning of a fund-raising campaign that will run through 2015. Construction on the institute may begin in about five years, Mr. Van Gorder says.
