Foundations and Companies Pledge Millions for Hurricane Ian Recovery Efforts

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

$127.5 million to Pfizer to develop maternal vaccines for Group B streptococcus and respiratory syncytial virus, two of the leading causes of death for newborns and young infants in lower-income countries for which no vaccines yet exist.

One grant of $100 million will support the manufacturing of Pfizer’s Group B strep vaccine for Phase 3 clinical trials. A second grant of $27.5 million will enable Pfizer to make a low-cost multidose vial that can be used to deliver the potential RSV vaccine to pregnant people in poorer countries.]


Equinix

$50 million commitment to the Equinix Foundation, the technology company’s new philanthropic entity that will make grants to advance equitable access to technology and education.

Open Society Foundations

$25 million to Bard College to back the Center for Indigenous Studies.

The grant, which matches a $25 million gift from the Gochman Family Foundation, will support faculty appointments, student scholarships, and a fellowship in Indigenous curatorial studies.

Deloitte

$10 million over five years to the Black Economic Alliance Foundation to enhance its programs to promote financial inclusion in Black communities.

Newman’s Own Foundation, Inclusive Capital Partners Foundation, and Walmart Foundation

$9.6 million to FoodCorps to back its Nourishing Futures program, which seeks to raise $250 million to ensure that 50 million students in the United States learn about nutrition and have equitable access to free, healthy meals in schools by 2030.

The amount is made up of $3.3 million from the Walmart Foundation, $3.25 million from the Newman’s Own Foundation, and $3 million from the Inclusive Capital Partners Foundation.

Lowe’s

$2 million to the Florida Disaster Fund, a private fund established last week to support disaster-relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

Nike

$2 million to the Trust for Public Land to create more parks, trails, and playgrounds to increase access to the outdoors for people from historically marginalized communities.

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

$1.5 million to the National Center for Choreography-Akron to create the Knight Dance Award, which will give a cash prize of $50,000 to one recipient each fall.

NeighborWorks America

$1.5 million to 18 organizations for recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, Alaska, and Kentucky in the wake of recent natural disasters in each region.

Mellon Foundation

$1.3 million to the New England Conservatory of Music to continue the Boston Bridge to Equity and Achievement in Music program, which identifies musically talented students in middle and high school from underrepresented backgrounds and gives them opportunities to pursue the study of classical music.

Citi Foundation

$1 million pledge toward hurricane-recovery and -relief efforts in communities across Florida. The commitment includes a $500,000 grant to the American Red Cross for emergency services in the area.

DeVos Family Foundation

$1 million for hurricane-aid efforts in Florida.

So far, $500,000 has gone to the Hurricane Recovery Fund, which is housed at the Heart of Florida United Way and the Central Florida Foundation, and the Florida Disaster Fund has received $250,000. The foundation plans to donate an additional $250,000 to rebuilding efforts in the region.

Home Depot Foundation

$1 million commitment for immediate disaster relief and long-term recovery efforts in communities affected by Hurricane Ian.

NFL Foundation

$1 million to hurricane-relief efforts led by nonprofit groups in southwest Florida.

The grant matches a $1 million pledge from the Glazer family, the owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for hurricane recovery in the region.

Wells Fargo Foundation

$1 million to the American Red Cross, Feeding Florida, the Florida Housing Coalition, and Volunteer Florida for hurricane relief in Florida. Each organization has received $250,000.
