Foundations Support Stem-Cell Program

California state officials decided Tuesday to accept $14-million from several foundations to pay for training grants for scientists working in stem-cell research through the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
A lawsuit has blocked the program from issuing $350-million in bonds that voters approved in 2004. The six foundations supporting the institute are the Jacobs Family Trust, the Benificus Foundation, the William K. Bowes Foundation, the Eli and Edythe L. Broad Foundation, the Moores Foundation, and Blum Family Partners.
If the institute wins its court case and is able to go ahead with its bond effort, it will repay the foundations, reports the Associated Press.
