Robert L. Schulz, leader of We the People Foundation for Constitutional Education, was sued on Tuesday by the Justice Department for promoting a tax scheme that the government says allowed people to avoid paying $21-million in income taxes, reports The New York Times.
The nonprofit organization contends that most Americans are not legally required to pay income tax.
The lawsuit accuses Mr. Schulz of selling a package of documents entitled “Legal Termination of Tax Withholding.”
Mr. Schulz says the lawsuit is without merit since he made the materials available free.
The organization has received more than $2-million in donations, the newspaper reports.
