Fund-Raising Handbook for Health Care Professionals

Fundraising Skills for Health Care Executives
by Joyce J. Fitzpatrick and Sandra S. Deller

Assuming a long-term perspective is the essential first step for any fund raiser who hopes to be successful, say the authors of this guide to fund raising for health-care organizations.

Joyce J. Fitzpatrick and Sandra S. Deller write that once a fund raiser has adopted that mindset, the rest of their advice should be easy to follow.

“Fund raising is rapidly becoming an expectation for executives in health-science schools and organizations,” the authors say. With that in mind, they aim their suggestions at experienced development officers and heath-care leaders as well as novice fund raisers, and seek to cover the basics of fund raising as well as the specifics of tax regulations affecting giving.

Ms. Fitzpatrick and Ms. Deller begin their guide with a history of philanthropy and then move on to describe the various types of gifts and ways of giving, such as the annual fund, unrestricted and restricted gifts, and bequests.

Subsequent chapters explain the “reasons for giving”–among them the desire to leave a personal legacy and affinity to an institution’s programs and goals–and suggest how to capitalize on those motivations; recommend ways to use existing resources, such as volunteers and standing committees, in the fund-raising process; and discuss the often-sensitive matter of contacting and then properly thanking donors.

Ms. Fitzpatrick is a professor of nursing at Case Western Reserve University, where Ms. Deller serves as director of major gifts.
