Gates Commits Up to $100 Million to Battle Coronavirus (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Up to $100 million to improve coronavirus detection, isolation, and treatment efforts; protect at-risk populations in Africa and South Asia; and accelerate the development of vaccines, other drugs, and diagnostics. Funding will go to a variety of organizations, including the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and public-health authorities in China and other countries that have reported confirmed cases.

W.M. Keck Foundation

$50 million to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for its capital campaign to build its planned David Geffen Galleries.

Koret Foundation

$10 million to the Hold On to Your Music Foundation and USC Shoah Foundation’s Institute for Visual History and Education to develop a new global educational curriculum that uses technology and music to teach up to 8 million students about the Holocaust.

Ballmer Group

$5 million to Benefits Data Trust to expand a program that aims to improve economic mobility and health for families.

Walmart Foundation

$5 million to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture to support its visitor-services programs and corporate leadership council by expanding its artifact collections and acquisitions, scholarship, research, education and public programs, exhibitions, and emerging technologies.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

$4.5 million to the Academy of American Poets to continue its Poets Laureate Fellowship program for at least three years.

PepsiCo Foundation

$2.5 million to the International Youth Foundation for its Passport to Success Traveler program, which gives young people ages 16 to 24 a digital, game-based curriculum that teaches social-emotional skills, critical thinking, self-confidence, responsibility, teamwork, communication, and other life skills.

Lilly Endowment

$1 million to Belmont University to support Nashville-area churches during community, denominational, and cultural shifts that affect congregational membership.

New Grant Opportunity

The Focus for Health Foundation is accepting applications for grants to address social determinants of health that aim to prevent child sex abuse. Unrestricted grants worth up to $25,000 will be awarded to small organizations with budgets under $1 million to end injustices that affect the health of vulnerable populations. Applicants must have regional or national programs that can be scaled to a larger level. Applications are due February 14.
