Gates Foundation Expands Scholars Program

August 7, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation plans to announce today that it will add $58-million to its $1-billion Millennium Scholars program, the first time the foundation has added any money to the scholarship program since it was started in 1999, reports the Associated Press.

The Millennium Scholars program supports minority students and young people from low-income families who want to pursue degrees in health, education, science, math, engineering, and library science.

The foundation is pouring more money into the program to encourage low-income and minority students to pursue courses in epidemiology, biomedical science, tropical diseases, public-health practice, and nutritional science.

The Gates Foundation devotes most of its grants to education and improving global health.
