The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is preparing to make a large gift to the University of Washington to start a public-health institute that would measure and evaluate health in the world’s poorest countries, reports The Seattle Times.
Mark Emmert, the university’s president, said that if the deal is successfully concluded, the gift would probably exceed $100-million. A senior foundation official approached Mr. Emmert last fall about plans for creating the institute, which would be named the Health Metrics Institute at the University of Washington.
Reports have surfaced that the institute will be headed by Christopher Murray, a Harvard University professor and a former top official at the World Health Organization.
Mr. Gates previously gave $64-million to the University of Washington in 2003 for the William H. Foege Building.
