Gates Fund Makes $500-Million Grant
August 10, 2006
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is giving a $500-million five-year grant to an organization dedicated to fighting deadly diseases in poor countries, The Seattle Times reports.
The grant to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria reflects a “hard-nosed” insistence on measuring results that is shared by both organizations, the newspaper said.
“This new contribution will help to strengthen health systems, support HIV-prevention work, and develop many other lifesaving services,” said Richard Feachem, the charity’s executive director.
The Gates Foundation had previously donated $150-million to the Geneva charity.
