January 19, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

Organizations that work on global health are growing fast in Seattle, in large part because they have been fueled by money from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, reports The Seattle Times.

A study conducted by the University of Washington says that about 30 percent of total spending on HIV/AIDS research in the United States is directed toward organizations in and around Seattle.

In addition, more than 200 organizations in Washington State are focused on global health, the research found. Programs based in Seattle reach 65 countries, the study found.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has made global health one of its top grant-making priorities.
