Getty Inquiry Looks for Ties to Smuggling Ring
April 20, 2006
Greek authorities are investigating whether an alleged conspiracy to smuggle antiquities to major U.S. museums has ties to the J. Paul Getty Museum, in Los Angeles, reports The New York Times.
Greek officials are pressing the museum to return four pieces they believe are stolen. They also recently raided a villa owned by the institution’s former antiquities director that they say contained more than a dozen antiquities not registered with the authorities.
A Getty spokesman said he knew little about the investigation but was trying to contact Greek authorities.
