The Getty Trust, in Los Angeles, announced on Monday that James N. Wood, former president of the Art Institute of Chicago, will replace Barry Munitz, who was forced to resign from the top job at Getty in February, the Los Angeles Times reports.
In taking over as president of the institution, Mr. Wood, a 65-year-old art historian, will oversee a $5.8-billion endowment and two museums—one a modern campus on a hilltop and the other a villa at the edge of Malibu. In addition, he will oversee the organization’s conservation and research institutes and a grant-making foundation with projects worldwide.
For the past year the trust has been embroiled in tumult, including revelations of questionable spending by Mr. Munitz and charges that the institution was involved in looting antiquities.
The organization unveiled numerous restructuring changes in its governance in recent months, and the state’s attorney general appointed an independent monitor to oversee the organization as it puts those changes into operation. (Read The Chronicle’s coverage of the attorney general’s investigation)
