Giving by Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee Faces Scrutiny

September 15, 2008 | Read Time: 1 minute

Conservative blog writers and others are hammering Sen. Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, for giving an average of $369 per year to charities during the past decade, according to their tax returns.

Paul L. Caron, a law professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Law, writes that the Democratic vice presidential candidate and his wife gave a smaller percentage of their income to charity than other Americans in their tax bracket.

“It is jarring that a couple earning over $200,000 per year would give as little as $2 per week to charity,” he writes on the Tax Prof Blog.

Other blog authors were more biting with their commentary.

An anonymous writer on Right Voices, a conservative blog, said the Obama campaign needs a new logo: “Change You Can Believe In (As Long As Someone Else Pays For It)”.

But according to an article in The Wall Street Journal, a spokesman for the campaign said the Bidens’ tax returns do not show contributions to their church or the amount of time Mrs. Biden spends working for the cancer-education charity she help found.

What do you think? Is the couple less generous than they should be?
