‘Giving Day’ Follows Turkey Day in 11 States
November 27, 2006
Eleven states now officially declare the day after Thanksgiving to be “Giving Day,” an effort to promote charitable donations during the holiday season, reports the Associated Press.
The group Catalogue for Philanthropy, based in Massachusetts, has convinced states in New England, the Midwest, and the South to declare a selfless holiday on what is traditionally a big day for shopping.
The group said it doesn’t want people to buy less, as “Black Friday” is an important day for the economy. “But they might want to buy something for somebody else,” said a spokesman.
