Giving Nonprofit Board Members the Courage to Raise Funds

Fearless Fundraising for Nonprofit Boards, by Worth George, helps nonprofit directors and board chairs motivate board members to participate in fund-raising activities for their organization. Mr. George, retired executive director of Pilgrim Place, a nonprofit organization in Claremont, Calif., writes that many board members lack the knowledge, skills, and courage needed to solicit donations from others. Mr. George begins by stressing that fund raising is one of the most important roles of a board; he suggests making this expectation clear to prospective board members when they are recruited. He describes actitvities to help beginning fund raisers overcome their anxieties, for instance by practicing a request for contributions. The guide concludes with a list of such tasks as drafting a fund-raising case statement, conducting research on prospective donors, and contacting local businesses to donate products and services, to illustrate the range of responsibilities that a board member can take on to assist a charity in attracting money and other resources.
