Global Warming Could Pose New Relief Challenges

May 15, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Christian Aid, a charity that raises money in Britain and Ireland, issued a report Monday that says diseases spread by global warming could kill 185 million people in sub-Saharan Africa by the end of the century, and displace millions more unless wealthy, developed countries take action immediately, reports Reuters.

The charity also said that as a result of its findings, it plans to focus its fund-raising goals on famine, floods, pestilence, and war, all of which, the charity said, are caused or exacerbated by global warming.

In the report, “The Climate of Poverty: Facts, Fears, and Hopes,” the nonprofit group said rich countries must end their dependence on fossil fuels and help poorer nations cope with the impact of global warming by allotting large amounts of money to aid countries in need.

Christian Aid told the news service that it based its estimate of 185 million deaths on figures from the United Nations and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
