‘Good’: a Magazine to Encourage Altruism

A new magazine called Good plans to examine the people, ideas, and institutions that are seeking to improve society.

In its premiere issue, which was released this month, the magazine includes features on many local and nonprofit efforts. Among them:

  • 826 Valencia, a tutoring center in San Francisco founded by the author David Eggers. The nonprofit group’s headquarters is designed to look like a store that sells pirate supplies in the hopes of getting young people excited about learning to write better.

  • The X-Prize Foundation, a group founded by the space entrepreneur Peter Diamandis that offers prizes “to foment scientific innovation free from the constraints of lawyers, lobbyists, and CEO’s.”

The next two prizes will go to a group that can build a fuel-efficient car and to scientists who develop a cheap method to sequence the human genome in the hopes of finding cures for major diseases.

  • Sustainable South Bronx, a nonprofit group that seeks to promote environmentalism in one of the nation’s poorest and most polluted urban areas. The group was founded by Majora Carter, who last year won a MacArthur Foundation fellowship for her work (The Chronicle, October 27, 2005).

The magazine does not just write about nonprofit groups: It is also raising money for them. The magazine says it will donate the full amount it charges for each subscription — $20 — to charity.

Subscribers are allowed to choose one of 12 groups as the beneficiary, including Teach for America, Unicef, and the World Wildlife Fund.

By last week, the magazine said it had raised more than $100,000 for the organizations.
