Goodwill Spreads Word About Used-Clothing Gifts

TAX WATCH

Goodwill Industries is encouraging potential donors of used clothing and household items not to be scared off by a part of the Pension Protection Act that more carefully regulates the tax benefits of such gifts.

The charity has offered guidelines for such donors, saying that taxpayers should keep detailed records of their donations. In some cases, that means taking photographs of items before they are donated.

“Now you must make sure the items are in good condition,” the charity’s president, George W. Kessinger, said. “But the donations are tax-deductible all the same.”

The IRS’s new rules on donated items can be found online.
