Google and Holocaust Museum Unveil Mapping Project

April 12, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

To help people better comprehend the heavy toll of war in the Darfur region of Sudan, the United State Holocaust Memorial Museum and Google have created Crisis in Darfur, a Web project that shows satellite images of burned-out villages, mosques, schools, and homes, reports CNET News.

Crisis in Darfur is the first installment of a joint effort between Google Earth and the museum called the Genocide Prevention Mapping Initiative. The program features photographs, data, and first-hand testimonies about the conflict in Darfur gathered from the U.S. State Department, the United Nations, photographers, and the museum.

Users can download the genocide program to use with the satellite-mapping feature of Google Earth.

The museum is also working on Mapping the Holocaust, which will use the map technology to show the history of the Holocaust in Europe.
