Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt will hand out $1-million in grants to individuals and groups working on technology-focused solutions to global problems, CBS News reports.

Mr. Schmidt and Jared Cohen, Google’s ideas director, announced the “New Digital Age Grants” in an interview Monday on CBS This Morning. The program is named for their 2013 book, The New Digital Age, which comes out in paperback next week. Schmidt plans to announce the grant recipients on March 10.

In a press release, the Google leader said that in traveling the world to write the book, he and Mr. Cohen “developed a strong belief in the power of technology to address some of the thorniest global challenges. … We felt it was important to recognize the work being done by nonprofits that show promise in these areas.”
