Three Republican senators on Friday officially asked Douglas Shulman, the IRS commissioner, to investigate whether AARP, the giant advocacy group for older people, deserves to keep its tax-exempt status.
Rep. Charles Boustany of Louisiana, who chairs the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight; Rep. Wally Herger of California, who chairs the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee; and Rep. Dave Reichert, of Washington State, signed a letter requesting a review and examination of AARP.
The request comes one week after a joint Ways and Means Committee held a hearing examining AARP’s financial structure and its advocacy efforts to promote passage of last year’s health-care bill.
