Making a Difference in Africa: Advice From Experienced Grantmakers, by Rob Buchanan and Jayne Booker, offers suggestions to help foundations provide optimal financial support for projects in Africa. Mr. Buchanan, director of international programs at the Council on Foundations, in Washington, and Ms. Booker, who served as a program officer at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, in Los Altos, Calif., provide background information on the demographics and economics of African countries. Drawing on interviews with officers from 33 private foundations, corporate-giving programs, and public charities, the authors give advice on deciding whether to support organizations based in the United States or abroad as well as on soliciting proposals and evaluating potential grantees. The guide, which is a joint project of the international-programs department of the Council on Foundations, in Washington, and the Africa Grantmakers’ Affinity Group, in New York, presents examples of several grant programs, including efforts that offer job training, work to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, and protect water supplies.
