Grant Trains Students to Be Philanthropists

November 1, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

An anonymous donor in Concord, Mass., has given $1.4-million to train adolescents in the art of philanthropy by allowing them to make grants of up to $11,000, reports The Boston Globe.

The funds will establish a new endowment and will be distributed through the Crossroads Community Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy program, which works with 13 local high schools and middle schools.

The program has two parts. In the first, students learn basic facts about nonprofit groups and the role of charity and philanthropy in building and maintaining civic relationships. In the second phase, students review applications for grants, conduct site visits, and award funds.

In addition, students must raise 10 percent of the money they award, while the endowment covers the other 90 percent.
