Grants Roundup: $150 Million for New Democracy Institute at Johns Hopkins

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

Stavros Niarchos Foundation

$150 million to Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences for a new institute focusing on civic engagement and the promotion of discourse to support open democracies.

Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

$52 million to the Global Platform for the Prevention of Autoimmune Diabetes for its first trial on primary oral insulin as a treatment for Type I diabetes.

Bloomberg Philanthropies

$50 million to the European Climate Foundation and its international partners for a global effort to change foreign policies and reduce the demand for coal.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation

$30 million to the Nature Conservancy for a five-year project to help protect rivers and watersheds in Europe and North America.


Kresge Foundation and W. K. Kellogg Foundation

$25 million in each of three years to Hope Starts Here: Detroit’s Early Childhood Partnership to augment early-childhood services in Detroit.

Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines

$5 million to the Northwest Area Foundation to create financial institutions that benefit community development and small businesses in Native-American areas in 13 states and three U.S. territories.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

$5.5 million to C3, a consortium of top liberal-arts colleges and universities, to increase faculty diversity.

Lilly Endowment

$1.67 million to the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving for a national study of the finances of religious congregations.

Jaharis Family Foundation

$1 million challenge grant to International Orthodox Christian Charities to provide food for refugees arriving in Greece, as well as children, families, and the elderly.
