Grants Roundup: $279 Million From Gates Backs Health-Data Work

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

$279 million to the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation to expand its work analyzing large tranches of medical data and measuring the success of health programs around the world.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Approximately $2.5 million to 10 music-education programs in Philadelphia designed to diversify the field of classical music. Recipients include Settlement Music School, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, the Primavera Fund, and Musicopia.

Jim Joseph Foundation

$2.15 million over four years to Mechon Hadar, a Jewish educational organization in New York, to increase participation in its programs.

Wells Fargo Foundation

$2 million over five years to GRID Alternatives to expand the nonprofit’s work to bring solar-energy systems to low-income communities.

Pan-American Life Insurance Group

The company and an anonymous donor gave $1 million to Loyola University New Orleans to support its new student center.

Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation

$1 million to support stem-cell research projects at the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of California at San Francisco, and the University of Southern California.
