Grants Roundup: $30 Million From Bloomberg Philanthropies for Arts Nonprofits in 6 Cities

Here are notable new grants The Chronicle has learned about in recent weeks:

Bloomberg Philanthropies

A total of $30 million in unrestricted grants over two years to 262 small and midsize nonprofit cultural institutions in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The grants were awarded as part of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Arts Innovation and Management program. Grantees were invited to participate and are required to secure matching funds. Bloomberg Philanthropies is joining with the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland to develop curricula and conduct trainings in each city.

Jim Joseph Foundation

$16 million over five years to Hillel International, the Jewish campus organization. The grant supports the nonprofit’s Drive to Excellence campaign to help implement the best practices for supporting Jewish student life.

L.A. Clippers Foundation

$3 million to City Year in support of its AmeriCorps members’ service in elementary schools in Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. This year, 309 City Year AmeriCorps members in the city will be placed in 26 schools in Watts, South Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, and Koreatown.

Brant Foundation

$1 million to Bard College for curatorial studies and art-history programs. The grant supports a teaching fellowship in contemporary arts named after the foundation and library and archive acquisitions for the Center for Curatorial Studies’ newly expanded library.

BJ’s Charitable Foundation

A total of $600,000 to Feeding America and 21 member food banks to support organizational development, food-safety training, and transportation costs for local agencies, shelters, food pantries, and other feeding programs.
