Grants Roundup: $5 Million Gift Will Build Baseball Fields

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Marcus Foundation
$13 million to the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center for a clinical trial on stem-cell treatments for osteoarthritis.
Carlson Family Foundation
$10 million to the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management for its capital campaign. This is the foundation’s second grant to the campaign; it previously gave $5 million in 2011.
Group One Thousand One
$5 million to the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation to build baseball fields and sports parks for youths in 10 cities, beginning with Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Washington.
Ballmer Group
$4.5 million over three years to the National Fund for Workforce Solutions for public-policy and training programs to help low-wage workers secure employment-advancement opportunities.
JPMorgan Chase
$4 million to the Entrepreneurs of Color Fund to expand its access to investment capital, education, and resources for minority entrepreneurs in Chicago. Fifth Third Bank is also granting $2.5 million for the program.
MathWorks
$3 million to CARE to continue its support for education programs that serve children and women in poor communities.
J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation
$2.1 million to Virginia Tech toward construction costs of its proposed Global Business and Analytics Complex at the Pamplin College of Business.
Walmart
$2 million to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute to expand internship opportunities on Capitol Hill for young people of color.
W.M. Keck Foundation
$1 million to the University of San Diego for collaborative research efforts to create a new class of autonomous intelligent materials that could be used in civil engineering, aerospace, and other areas.
United Airlines
$1 million to First Place for Youth to expand its programs that offer comprehensive services to youths in foster care and young adults who are homeless in Los Angeles.
New Grant Opportunity
Congressional Sports for Charity is soliciting requests for grants from nonprofit groups in Washington that serve children and families. Proceeds from the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity will be disbursed to eligible nonprofit groups. Initial proposals must be submitted online by August 3. Selected charities will later be invited to submit full applications.
