Grants Roundup: $55 Million From Stavros Niarchos Foundation for Mid-Manhattan Library

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

Stavros Niarchos Foundation

$55 million to renovate and create an endowment for the Mid-Manhattan Library in New York City.

JPMorgan Chase

$40 million over three years to create economic opportunity in the South Side and West Side neighborhoods of Chicago. Recipients will include nonprofits that provide job-skills training and help families improve their financial stability.

Ballmer Group

$20 million to College Possible for programs that train colleges and high schools to mentor low-income students.

Build Health Challenge

$13 million to 19 U.S. communities to improve public health. The grant makers include the Advisory Board Company, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, the Colorado Health Foundation, the de Beaumont Foundation, the Episcopal Health Foundation, Interact for Health, The Kresge Foundation, Mid-Iowa Health Foundation, New Jersey Health Initiatives, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Telligen Community Initiative, and W.K. Kellogg Foundation.


J. Robert Jones Charitable Trust

$6.3 million to Midland College for scholarships.

Taube Philanthropies

$5 million in challenge grants to five Bay Area Jewish Community Centers.

David C. Copley Foundation

$5 million to Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego to create a pediatric psychiatry emergency department.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

$4.6 million to National 4-H Council for programs that improve community health. The council will work with Dakota State University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, University of Minnesota, University of Tennessee, and Utah State University to develop the programs.

Charles Koch Foundation

$3.6 million to Wichita State University to create an Institute for the Study of Economic Growth.


Carnegie Corporation of New York

$1.3 million to NYC Leadership Academy to develop training materials for education leaders.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

$1.1 million to National Louis University to improve its programs that help disadvantaged students.

James M. Cox Foundation

$1 million to Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum in Dayton, Ohio, to restore three historic buildings.

WellCare Health Plans

$1 million to Volunteer Florida, which coordinates volunteers and donations before, during, and after disasters.
