Grants Roundup: Emory University Gets $25 Million to Transform Patient-Centered Care

Here are notable new grants compiled by The Chronicle:

James M. Cox Foundation

$25 million over five years to Emory University’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center to develop new models of patient-centered care designed to improve patient experiences and outcomes. Efforts include improving telemedicine options, better coordinating health-care teams, and providing consistent patient education. The grant creates two endowed chairs affiliated with the Winship Cancer Institute. Prostate-cancer care will be the initial clinical focus, but it will expand to include other areas.

Omidyar Network and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

$2.5 million and $1.4 million, respectively, to support the expansion of Crisis Text Line, a free text-message support line founded by Nancy Lublin. The money will power the nonprofit’s plan to process more than 25-million text messages in 2016 and train more than 4,000 volunteer crisis counselors. In addition, it will help the organization share its large set of public-health data openly for noncommercial use. These grants led the nonprofit’s $7-million fundraising drive. The balance was made up of smaller foundation grants and individual donations.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation

A total of $969,276 to 20 community nonprofits with programs to grow, distribute, or market fresh food in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Grantees include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, which, through its Farm-to-Family program, brings healthy, local food to the clubs and supports bimonthly dinners with cooking classes and nutrition education for families.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

$750,000 to Centre College in Danville, Ky., to launch a four-year effort to strengthen diversity and inclusion on campus. The grant will fund a study of campus demographics and two tenure-track positions, one each in the humanities and the social sciences. Faculty who focus on topics of diversity will also be hired to teach three-week courses offered each January.

Gulf Coast Community Foundation

A total of $410,000 to nine arts and cultural organizations in Florida’s Gulf Coast region. Grantees include the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and the Sarasota Ballet.
