Grants Roundup: Fundraising Firm Gives $1 Million for Research on Philanthropy

Here are notable new grants compiled by The Chronicle:

Hartsook Companies

The fundraising consulting firm donated $1 million to the Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy at Plymouth University in England. The center, which will be renamed Hartsook Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy, conducts research and teaches about the psychology of philanthropy.

The donation will support research about fundraising, boards, innovation, donor relationships, and philanthropic advising. Eventually, the university hopes to establish the world’s first School of Sustainable Philanthropy.

Resnick Foundation

$25 million to the Milken Institute, which will be renamed the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Center for Public Health, to expand its public-health programs in the United States and abroad.

BrightFocus Foundation

$11.7 million for research projects on Alzheimer’s disease, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Grant recipients will be announced this summer.


Laura and John Arnold Foundation

$3.2 million to John Jay College of Criminal Justice to establish the Research Network on Misdemeanor Justice to study enforcement and detention in seven cities.

Delta Air Lines Foundation

$2 million for a new building for Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business. Named the Delta Student Success Center, it will house the career-advancement center, the office of undergraduate assistance, and a new office of experiential learning.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

$1.5 million to Stanford University to support library programs that promote the use of linked open data. Stanford University Libraries will coordinate a team representing Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, and Princeton universities, plus the Library of Congress, to develop a new model for connecting libraries online.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics

$8 million, shared between the two organizations, to support research by Asimina Arvanitaki, a top theoretical particle physicist.

Ms. Arvanitaki will hold a new chair at the institute in Waterloo, Ont. The grant will also support research and training ties between the institute and Greece.


Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

$189,983 to the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative at the University of Arkansas School of Law to study tribal food policy and community health. Research data will be made available to tribal governments.
