Grants Roundup: MacArthur Gives $100 Million for Syrian Refugee Education Program

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation

$100 million to the Sesame Workshop and International Rescue Committee for an early-childhood intervention program to educate Syrian refugee children in the Middle East.

Caris Foundation

$98.5 million to create a consortium including the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Catholic Medical Mission Board, and the Haitian Health Foundation to expand and strengthen essential health services for up to 4.2 million Haitians.

Tata Consultancy Services

$50 million to Cornell Tech for capital projects on the university’s Roosevelt Island campus, as well as collaborative technology research and the expansion of K-12 digital-literacy programs in New York City.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

$15 million to Unicef for its Vaccine Independence Initiative, which purchases critical vaccines for use in poor countries.

Google.org

$10 million for the Goodwill Digital Career Accelerator, which will team up 1,000 Google volunteers with 125 local Goodwill organizations to teach digital skills to job seekers.

San Francisco Foundation

$4 million to the Puerto Rico Community Foundation for the island’s continuing relief efforts following Hurricane Maria.

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

$3 million to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to develop new observing systems that aim to reduce the cost of ocean science and engineering.

Duke Endowment

$1.5 million to the Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative for a coaching program for 10 child-care providers and other early-childhood agencies in the Charleston area.

McGregor Fund

$600,000 to the Detroit Justice Center, a new community law center that will address the effects of mass incarceration poverty on Detroit families.

New Grant Opportunity

The National Psoriasis Foundation is accepting applications for research grants through January 19. The foundation plans to award more than $2 million in 2018, and applicants may request up to $200,000 over two years for translational research or $75,000 for one-year discovery grants.
