Grants Roundup: Mellon Gives $10 Million for Humanities; Walmart Sends $5 Million to Puerto Rico

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
$10 million to the University of California system office to endow advanced studies through its Humanities Research Institute and Humanities Network across the system’s 10 university campuses.
Yawkey Foundations
$10 million to Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital for a new surgery pavilion in Georgetown, S.C.
Harold Alfond Foundation
$6.1 million to the Alfond Youth Center to develop a family-wellness project in Waterville, Me.
Chan Zuckerberg Initiative
$5.5 million to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst’s Center for Data Science to use artificial intelligence to search millions of scientific research papers.
Walmart
$4.9 million to Mercy Corps to continue its hurricane relief and recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, particularly rebuilding energy and water-filtration facilities, small farms, and disaster preparedness. The money includes $3 million directly from the company and $1.9 million from the Walmart Puerto Rico Relief Fund, administered through the Miami Foundation.
Thurgood Marshall College Fund
$2.7 million to Texas Southern University for the Center for Justice Research, a new institute to study criminal-justice overhaul.
W.K. Kellogg Foundation
$1.2 million to the Association for Enterprise Opportunity to develop new programs, products, and services to aid African-American entrepreneurs and business owners.
Bank of America
$1 million to the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative, which aims to protect cultural heritage and artifacts around the world in the aftermath of disasters.
Marguerite Casey Foundation
$200,000 to the People’s Action Institute for its nonpartisan voter-engagement programs in 30 states and to develop a strategic plan and a grass-roots, volunteer work force to bolster civic engagement.
New Grant Opportunities
The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation will award grants to nonprofit theater organizations in Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington that are planning performances relevant to current social issues. Eligible arts groups must have been active for at least two years and have had annual revenue of $750,000 or more during that time. The award may be used to cover artistic, production, or overhead expenses for one production occurring from June 1, 2018, to May 31, 2019. Initial applications are due February 16.
The Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation’s Innovations in Care Program will award two grants of up to $600,000 each over three years for nursing programs that address the health-care needs of vulnerable populations, including people who are homeless or poor, ethnic or racial minorities, LGBTQ, or living in rural areas. The deadline for applications is March 5.
