Grants Roundup: Moore Foundation Commits $33 Million-Plus to Aid Inventors

Here are notable new grants compiled by The Chronicle:

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

$33.75 million over 10 years through the foundation’s Moore Inventor Fellows program to support early-career inventors at U.S. universities. Each of the five people selected in the first class of fellows will receive $825,000 over three years.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

$25 million, plus a $12.5-million loan, to DKT International to expand its reproductive-health programs and its distribution of contraceptives around the world.

Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation

Up to $10 million in matching grants to the Semper Fi Fund’s programs to aid military members and their families.

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

$3 million to create an endowed chair in polymer science and polymer engineering at the University of Akron.

Alfond Foundation

$1.5 million to the University of Maine to improve fundraising for athletics.

NV Energy Foundation

$1 million to Opportunity Village, a nonprofit in Nevada that provides services to people with disabilities.

Carnegie Corporation of New York, Ford Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Institute of International Education

$1 million to provide scholarships to Syrian students studying at U.S. colleges.

Facebook

$1 million over four years to Code for Fun, a computer-science-education nonprofit started by a former Facebook employee.

Jonathan Logan Family Foundation

$1 million to the Carey Institute for Global Good’s Nonfiction Program.

Give Something Back Foundation

$1 million to Mercy College for scholarship programs.
