Grants Roundup: NFL Gives $2.5 Million for Concussion Research and Education

Here are notable new grants that grant makers have announced to The Chronicle in recent weeks:

Walmart Foundation

$10.5 million total to four national nonprofits implementing nutrition education and school meals programs.

Recipients include the National Farm to School Network ($1.5 million), Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom ($5 million), the School Superintendents Association ($2.5 million), and Action for Healthy Kids ($1.5 million).

National Football League

$2.5 million to University of Washington Medicine to create a sports health and safety institute to advance research, education, and advocacy for sports-related concussions.

Atlantic Philanthropies

$2.5 million over five years to Brave New Films supporting 25 one-year fellowships in digital storytelling and social media for people of color. Part of the fund will support a “loaned-executive program,” which will provide a 10-week course to nonprofit leaders so that they bring lessons back to their own organizations.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

$2 million to Bard College supporting the launch of a new masters of music program in curatorial, critical, and performance studies and the Orchestra Now, an ensemble for advanced orchestral training.

Ferring Pharmaceuticals

$1.24 million for the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage supporting five years of research to sustain and revitalize endangered languages.
