Grants Roundup: Starr Foundation Gives $15 Million to St. John’s University

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
$95 million over six years to the Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Systems Initiative, which will support research on electronic and magnetic materials. Read more of our coverage of this pledge toward scientific research.
Salesforce.org
$18 million for a variety of San Francisco-area causes including education and homelessness. Salesforce.org is the nonprofit affiliate of the cloud-computing and software company Salesforce.
Starr Foundation
$15 million to St. John’s University to establish the Maurice R. Greenberg Leadership Initiative at the School of Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science in its College of Business.
Charles Guilford Woodward Trust Fund
$12.3 million unrestricted grant to Trinity College. Woodward, who graduated from the college in 1898, died in 1950 and set up a trust to benefit his grandnieces until their deaths, upon which the balance would be donated to his designated charities.
California Endowment
$10 million to create a fund for outreach and education efforts during the 2020 U.S. Census and ensure an accurate population count in California, regardless of residents’ socioeconomic or immigration status.
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
$5 million to the Philadelphia Art and Technology Fund, which will be shared between the Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Wells Fargo
$5 million over three years to Grid Alternatives to install solar panels in tribal communities across the United States.
Samuel F.B. Morse Trust
$4.5 million to the Middlebury Institute of International Studies to endow student scholarships, academic programs, and future university priorities.
Levi Strauss & Co.
$1 million over four years to the Safer Tomorrow Fund, which will support the work of charities and youth activists who are working to end gun violence in America.
UPS Foundation
$1 million pledge to relief organizations including the American Red Cross, CDC Foundation, and Salvation Army for recovery from flooding and damage caused by Hurricane Florence.
New Grant Opportunity
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is accepting proposals for its Good Neighbor Grants program. Nonprofit groups should focus on K-12 education, college access and completion, or visual and performing arts education, and they must be located in Washington or nearby counties of Maryland and Virginia. Project grants are worth between $10,000 and $35,000. Proposals must be received by November 1.
