Grants Roundup: Wells Fargo Pledges $20 Million for Affordable Housing in N.C.

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
H.D. Smith Foundation
$20 million to the University of Illinois Foundation for its football performance center, which will be renamed in honor of the late Henry and Betty Smith. The gift also endows scholarships for student athletes and will pay for medical, engineering, and athletic research at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
Wells Fargo
$20 million in pledges to create low-cost housing options in Charlotte, N.C. The funding includes $6 million to NeighborhoodLIFT to offer down-payment matching grants for homebuyers in Charlotte and $5 million to the Foundation for the Carolinas for its Housing Opportunity Investment Fund.
Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas
$5.1 million to Texas Southern University for academic research and equipment to develop new treatments for cancer.
Ballmer Group
$2.6 million to Parents as Teachers to hire additional staff members and provide home visits and support services for families with vulnerable children.
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
$2 million over two years to Code for America to strengthen its network of community organizers, software developers, and designers who use technology to improve how local government serves its constituents.
Merck Foundation
$2 million over four years to Marshall Health for a new approach serving areas with high rates of opioid addiction and overdose deaths in West Virginia.
Houston Endowment
$1.7 million over three years to the Mid-America Arts Alliance for its professional-development program for small and midsize arts and culture nonprofit groups.
W.M. Keck Foundation
$1 million to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for an acoustic telescope that will enable researchers to map and study sounds at the bottom of the ocean.
Lowe’s
$1 million to Keep America Beautiful for 44 grass-roots campaigns and to sponsor its annual Great American Cleanup, which mobilizes volunteers to pick up litter, plant community gardens, and build or restore playgrounds.
New Grant Opportunity
The Retirement Research Foundation is seeking letters of inquiry for grants to benefit nonprofit groups serving Americans age 65 or older in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, or Wisconsin. Charities that support advocacy, direct service, research, and education and training for professionals who work with older Americans are eligible. Letters of inquiry must be submitted by December 1, and full applications are due February 1.
