Greenpeace Fund Criticized for Operations

October 16, 2003 | Read Time: 1 minute

By Grant Williams

Public Interest Watch, a self-described charity watchdog group, has accused the research and education arm of Greenpeace USA of illegally transferring millions of dollars in tax-deductible contributions to its related advocacy organization.

Greenpeace USA said that the allegations were “completely false and without merit.” It added: “Greenpeace USA acts in full compliance with all relevant U.S. and state laws.”

Public Interest Watch, which is supported by business organizations, put its charges in a letter to the Internal Revenue Service, asking the government to investigate the activities of the Greenpeace charity — known as the Greenpeace Fund. The IRS does not comment publicly on such requests.

Since it was created last year, Public Interest Watch has been critical of a variety of nonprofit organizations that it says misuse charitable funds.
