Group Urges Donations of Federal Tax Refunds

As the Treasury Department mails millions of tax-rebate checks to families with children this month, a nonprofit group that opposes the $330-billion in federal tax cuts enacted this year is urging people to donate their rebates to charity and petition the government to stop what it calls irresponsible tax cuts.
The group, known as United for a Fair Economy, says about 300 taxpayers have signed its petition against the tax cuts. Titled “Let’s Really Leave No Child Behind,” the petition criticizes the Bush administration for not doing more to help the poor and middle class. United for a Fair Economy is an advocacy group in Boston that seeks to reduce income inequality.
Among the provisions of the tax-cut law the President signed in May was an increase in the child tax credit to $1,000 per child, up from $600. The credit is effective this year, so the Treasury is mailing the amount of the increase, up to $400 per child, directly to families.
United for a Fair Economy also urged Americans to donate tax rebates in 2001, when a previous tax-cut package passed.
The petition is on the group’s Web site at http://www.ufenet.org.
