Groups Investigate Charity-Worker Murders in Sri Lanka

March 12, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

The founder of Doctors Without Borders will help investigate the murders of charity workers during Sri Lanka’s civil war, reports AFP.

Bernard Kouchner has been appointed to the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons, which will investigate 15 separate atrocities in Sri Lanka, including the deaths of 17 French charity workers in August.

The Sri Lankan government initially resisted Mr. Kouchner’s appointment to the group, which monitors local authorities to make sure those authorities comply with international human-rights standards.

Lately, however, the government has embraced Mr. Kouchner’s help—which some critics interpret as an attempt to deflect criticism. Other critics worried that the group’s intervention will threaten Sri Lanka’s autonomy.
