Growth at Google.org

One year into his tenure as executive director of Google.org, Larry Brilliant shares his thoughts about the organization’s new employees and the Internet search engine’s philanthropic plans in his blog posting on the company’s Web site.
“There were four of us one year ago; today we are 25 people,” Mr. Brilliant writes. He adds that Google.org is still looking to add a few more “good people” and directs interested candidates to the organization’s most recent job listings.
Mr. Brilliant says the foundation had been “in a bit of a quiet period” but that in the coming year it plans to make “more significant grants and investments.”
“Google.org is looking to better understand the inextricable linkages among climate change, global public health, and economic development, and the impact of global warming on the poor,” he writes. “We want to fund projects that are making a difference and that are effective on a large scale.”

How can a company like Google.org become a major philanthropic force? What kinds of projects do you think would be a wise use of the foundation’s money?
