Guidance for Nonprofit Groups in Filing Forms 990

November 25, 2004 | Read Time: 1 minute

IRS Form 990 Tax Preparation Guide for Nonprofits, Revised Edition, by Jody Blazek, shows nonprofit organizations how to communicate clear, concise, and accurate information about their finances and operations through informational tax returns and other such documents. Jody Blazek, an accountant, writes that the tax returns—known as Forms 990—are used not only as financial documents, but also as a means for journalists, scholars, and donors to learn about an organization’s mission and accomplishments. Her book, updated from 2001, includes sample tax forms with line-by-line instructions; a summary of tax issues that affect nonprofit groups; recommendations on how to inform the Internal Revenue Service of changes in an organization’s activities and structure; and advice for maximizing deductions in calculating taxes due on earnings from activities unrelated to a charity’s mission. A new companion Web site offers sample tax forms, checklists to be sure a group has complied with the law, and announcements of changes in IRS rules.
